Things to do in San Francisco

My cousin is heading out to SF at the beginning of July, and asked me if I could recommend some chill things to do, and some active things to do, and some nightlife suggestions. Here is my list, what would you add to it?

-Book a trip to Alcatrez
-Wander around North Beach, hike to coit tower for the view, then have a fantastic Italian Dinner
-Walk up and down Haight st, looking at vintage clothing, head shops, and see the local hippies
-Bike across Golden gate bridge, and wander into Sausalito to have lunch on the water
-Spend a day in Golden Gate Park, visiting the Academy of Sciences (book the planetariam as soon as you arrive, or it will get sold out), and the Balenciaga exhibit next door at the de Young Museum (exhibition closes on July 4th).
-On Tuesday, go to Kabuki Springs and Spa for the coed spa
-Avoid fishermans warf, unless you like t-shirts, hard rock cafes, or really want a crab sandwich
-Go see a live concert at the warfield/ independent/ fillmore/  etc (or splurge for Lenny Cravitz and U2 at the Oakland Colluseum)
-Go dancing at the gay bars in the Castro, with DJ's playing trashy house music
-Go dancing at DNA lounge, Shine, Mighty, 550 Barnevelt, for Breakbeats, dubstep, etc (go to nitevibe.com to get listings)
-Visit djsolomon.net to find out where my cousin in law is playing
-Have brunch at the Pork Store either on Haight St. or in the Mission
-Eat a delicious and cheap burrito at Poncho Villa at 16th and Mission, their vegetarian options are great.
-Go to Zeitgeist on a Sunday afternoon for a bloody mary
-Go ahead, visit Union Square for the mainstream shopping options, and eat at the cheesecake factory at the top of Macy's
-Visit the Ferry building, have a cup of Blue Bottle Coffee, eat gourmet cheeses and salami
-Wander around China Town

Visit the East Bay!
-On a Saturday or Sunday head out to Berkeley- wander around Telegraph Ave for the weekend hippy craft vendors, and while you're there, visit the Berkeley campus, eat lunch at Intermezzo (Telegraph and Channing) for the best freaking veggie delight salad ever, also get the poppy seed dressing
-Go hike in Tilden Park,
-Eat brunch at the Thai Temple between 9am-1pm on Sunday (served at an actual buddhist temple)
-Hang out at the Farmer's Market near Lake Merritt on a Saturday morning
-Eat at Zachary's Pizza, near the Rockridge BART station in Oakland
-If you want a splurge- eat at Alice Water's Chez Penisse in the Gourmet Ghetto of Berkeley
-If you want to see the areas largest supplier of hydroponic and weed growing supplies in the world, go to iGrow in Oakland

  1. Sunrise Tai Chi in Sutro Park. When you're done, walk down the hill and tour the old Sutro baths and walk through Lands End. When your belly starts to rumble, head back and have a grilled cheese at Louis Diner.

Visit the buffalo in Golden Gate park on a Sunday and with your baguette and blueberry goat cheese spread, picnic at Strawberry hill in the park, too!

Have a delicious vegetarian meal at Green's Restaurant after you walk through the greens of Fort Mason, and only after you've barked back at the seals at Pier 39. With a full belly and a pair of sneakers on your feet, walk through the Marina Greens to Crissy Field. Visit the nature center and have a cappuccino if you must. Keep walking along the water until you're standing beneath Golden Gate Bridge. Walk across. That evening take twenty minutes to put band-aids over the blisters on your feet.

Call up Golden Gate Recreation and sign up (verbally) for a free ranger tour of Point Bonita Lighthouse, a haunted midnight ghost tour of the Presidio or, even better, a ranger-spnsored evening bonfire at Fort Funston.

When your in the mood, channel your favorite beatnik writers and put down a few beers while sitting in the Poets Corner of Cafe Vesuvius.
